Ghislaine Maxwell is the daughter of media tycoon Robert Maxwell and sister of Kevin Maxwell. A British socialite who lived in London and New York, she became a convicted sex trafficker who served as Jeffrey Epstein's partner and co-conspirator from approximately 1991 until his 2008 conviction.
In 1993, Ghislaine was introduced to James Hatt, a British telecommunications executive working with her brother Kevin. During this period, she acted as an intermediary courier in London-New York meetings and participated in discussions concerning Grigory Luchansky and telecom deals. According to witness testimony, she was present during discussions about fund flows and allegedly made sexual propositions to Hatt during their business interactions.
Ghislaine played an active role in facilitating high-level business connections. She took Luchansky to Wall Street and attempted to organize a meeting between Luchansky and Bill Clinton, though this effort was unsuccessful. According to Kevin Maxwell's statement to Hatt, Kevin introduced Ghislaine to Jeffrey Epstein. Her relationship with Epstein's finances was overseen by her brother Kevin, and she was represented by the law firm Cohen & Gresser.
Maxwell was essential to Epstein's trafficking operation. She recruited and groomed victims directly, provided social legitimacy and elite access to British aristocracy and intelligence circles, participated in abuse alongside Epstein, managed logistics and travel, and maintained the operation over nearly two decades. As a licensed helicopter pilot, she personally flew VIPs to Little St. James.
She founded the TerraMar Project, an ocean conservation nonprofit, which operated from 2012 to 2019.
In December 2021, Maxwell was convicted on five federal counts including sex trafficking conspiracy and transporting a minor for illegal sexual activity. She was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison and is currently incarcerated at FCI Tallahassee.
