Cyrus R. Vance Jr. is an American attorney and former public official who served as the District Attorney of New York County from 2010 to 2021. As Manhattan DA, he led one of the most prominent prosecutorial offices in the United States, overseeing complex financial crimes, public corruption cases, and high-profile investigations involving national political and corporate figures.

Before taking office, Vance was a principal partner at Morvillo, Abramowitz, Grand, Iason, Anello, & Bohrer, P.C., a firm known for white-collar criminal defense and investigations.

He is the son of Cyrus Vance, who served as U.S. Secretary of State under Jimmy Carter.

Tenure

• Paul Manafort (2019): Vance filed state mortgage fraud charges against Paul Manafort. The charges were later dismissed on double jeopardy grounds after Manafort’s federal conviction.
• Harvey Weinstein (2015 decision): Vance’s office declined to prosecute an earlier sexual assault allegation against Harvey Weinstein involving Ambra Gutierrez, despite a recorded conversation obtained by the NYPD. The decision drew sustained public criticism and prompted review by then-Governor Andrew Cuomo. Vance defended the non-prosecution decision as based on evidentiary concerns.
• Trump Investigation (2019–2021): In connection with the Stormy Daniels matter, Vance subpoenaed accounting firm Mazars for eight years of tax and financial records belonging to Donald Trump. The resulting case, Trump v. Vance, reached the U.S. Supreme Court, which held that a sitting president is not immune from state criminal subpoenas for private documents. The investigation later expanded to include scrutiny of the Trump Organization and CFO Allen Weisselberg. The matter was passed to successor Alvin Bragg in 2022.
• Gravity Knife Enforcement: Vance’s office broadly enforced New York’s gravity knife statute. In Cracco v. Vance (2019), a federal court ruled the enforcement unconstitutional due to vagueness and arbitrary application. The law was subsequently repealed.

Later Career

Vance did not seek reelection in 2021 and left office at the end of his term. He is currently a partner at Baker McKenzie.

Personal

Vance married printer and photographer Peggy McDonnell in 1984. They have two children.
